Description
Under general supervision, adjusts and controls the distribution and placement of asphaltic mixtures from mechanized asphalt-laying equipment; assists in directing a small crew of workers engaged in preparing and finishing asphalt surfaces.
Examples of Duties
Adjusts and controls the flow, width, distribution, and grade of asphaltic mixtures from asphalt paving machines by manipulating and adjusting external control devices.
Ensures asphaltic mixtures brought to specified grade and depth.
Assigns other workers to specific manual raking and luting tasks.
Directs dumping of asphalt into machines.
Instructs other workers in controlling the laying operation of paving machines.
Assists superior in directing pavement areas to be cut out to ensure quality work in resurfacing.
Assists in training other workers in activities associated with street resurfacing or construction such as to manually rake and lute asphalt, tend tool heaters and asphalt kettles, cut out heaves and other preparatory work prior to resurfacing.
Performs and/or leads other workers in performing any tasks associated with asphalt resurfacing activities.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Three years of experience in asphalt paving including two years of experience in controlling the operation of asphalt paving machines.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Employees in this class may be required to operate a motor vehicle - Valid State of Michigan Operator License required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Basic safety practices required for safe use of tools, materials and equipment.
Asphalt raking and luting and the methods and materials used in asphalt resurfacing.
Techniques and equipment used in spreading and in making accurate estimates of paving materials required for various projects.
SKILL IN:
Performing street resurfacing work.
Physical and mechanical dexterity.
Observation.
ABILITY TO:
Direct the work of others.
Operate necessary tools and equipment.
Display initiative and resourcefulness in handling unusual asphalt paving problems.
Interact effectively with subordinates and other department personnel with tact and diplomacy.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service; - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service. (In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply); • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service; • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
