Under general supervision, assists technical management staff in the design, selection, installation, implementation, testing, monitoring and administration of department engineering technology and projects.

Examples of Duties

  • Collects, analyzes, develops standards for and presents technical documentation and information for use in planning, design, procurement, construction, monitoring and compliance work as well as coordination of technical projects.

  • Performs the field inspection of construction projects and prepares Inspector Daily Reports (IDR) and inputs data in the Michigan Department of Transportation Field Manager software.

  • Interprets contract, engineering and other technical documentation to develop information pertinent to assigned technical projects or areas of responsibility.

  • Uses knowledge of codes, regulations, policies and procedures to do inspections, monitor and observe specialized portions of engineering, construction, maintenance and operations contracts, technical pilot projects, legal and contract compliance requirements.

  • Conducts special studies and tests requiring application of elementary engineering principles in connection with engineering, operations, maintenance and other technological projects.

  • Prepares reports related to assigned technical problems, monitors work, details tests conducted and makes observations of results obtained.

  • Determines spatial representation of information and prepares engineering drawings and maps on Computer Assisted Drafting and Design (CADD) and applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology.

  • Assigns and uses CADD levels for project mapping data attachment to city base maps and does requisite consultation and coordination with department divisions and other city departments.

  • Develops cell libraries and standards for the integration and presentation of project documentation data in CADD.

  • Confers with and coordinates project instructions, documentation and information with designated personnel, departmental divisions and other agencies.

  • Examines and interprets source material, such as tables, contracts, engineering documents, catalogs, maps, specifications, operations manuals, drawings, office records and other documents for reference in carrying out assignments and writes minor engineering or other technical specifications.

  • Assembles and summarizes technical data into charts and graphs, maintains and modifies databases, records and specialized logs.

  • Calculates quantities of materials required and assists in the procurement of goods and services.

  • Prepares equipment for project or monitoring work.

  • Prepares work schedules and supervises the work of assigned technical or clerical staff.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or G.E.D. with successful completion of coursework in algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Completion of advanced training with coursework applicable to engineering or engineering technology work. Associate degree in design or engineering technology is preferred.

Four years of experience in technical work that includes CADD operation for engineering, planning or mapping projects, or other technical work involving the application of the principles, methods and techniques of engineering technology and the presentation of technical documentation and information in support of coordination of engineering projects.

  • Visualize spatial relationships and observe operations in detail.

  • Instruct others in the use of information technology equipment.

  • Diagnose data communications problems and recover from error conditions.

  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

  • Use electronic testing instruments.

  • Use GIS equipment and software in support of technical projects.

  • Acquire additional knowledge and education to remain current in field.

Supplemental Information


Valid State of Michigan Operator License. Employees in this class may be required to operate a motor vehicle.

Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Fieldwork involves exposure to a variety of industrial plant processes and construction sites and seasonal weather conditions.

City employees accrue sick leave based on the number of regular hours worked. Full time employees earn ninety-six (96) hours of sick leave per year. You may carry over your unused sick leave. Effective July 7, 2012 maximum accumulation is 300 hours.

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service; - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service. (In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply); • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service; • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
