Description
Under general supervision, responsible for the civil engineering field work performed by the City Engineering Division. The Field Engineer performs related work as required.
Examples of Duties
Direct a group of technical assistants engaged in furnishing survey field work who:
Survey established permanent bench marks.
Establish line and grade for various construction projects.
Make land surveys for purposes or records, mapping, and assessments.
Supervise inspections performed by subordinates to:
Ensure compliance with plans and specifications on contract and departmental construction work.
Ensure inspections for public sewers, sewer outlets, water mains and tunnels, pumping stations, various types of buildings and structures, paving, and other construction work.
Test construction materials and take test borings of subsoils.
Plan, assign, and schedule the work of subordinates.
Check reports and completed work for satisfactory performance.
Consult with department heads, contractors and the public regarding the services rendered and the interpretation of data, rules, and specifications.
Suggest changes and/or improvements and approve or disapprove construction work.
Authorize payments to contractors on the basis of percentage of completion of project, and any contract changes.
Resolve inspection concerns and disputes.
Review time books and payroll.
Order field equipment and supplies.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
Five (5) years of experience in surveying and inspection work present in construction projects and the testing of materials used; preferably in a municipality including three years of experience in a supervisory capacity.
Equivalency
Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Detroit Residency Credit: 15 points
Veterans' Preference: 0 to 15 points
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirement of this position.

Must be a registered professional engineer in the State of Michigan
Valid State of Michigan Operator License required

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service; - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service. (In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply); • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service; • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
