POSITON IS BEING FILLED THROUGH A LIMITED-TERM APPOINTMENT MAY LAST UP TO TWO YEARS WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE EXTENDED BUT WITH NO GUARANTEE MAY ALSO HAVE THE ABILITY TO GO PERMANENT BUT WITH NO GUARANTEE

This position performs all surface, and roadside maintenance, and winter maintenance activities of State trunk lines within the right of way. The work area is generally within the City if Detroit; however, work may be assigned anywhere within the region. Special assignments may be outside the region area. Employee must be skilled to operate equipment used in a typical maintenance garage. The major equipment used is listed in the following duties (15). Employees in this class are required to participate in the work element system and travel to assigned work areas. Employees also must live within 60 minutes of the Detroit Maintenance Garage. During the winter season, winter maintenance activities may occur 24/7. This responsibility is split between the day shift and night shift any day during the week when necessary. This activity is critical to the safety motoring public.

Education

Education typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience

Transportation Maintenance Worker 6

No specific type or amount of experience is required.

Transportation Maintenance Worker 7

One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking with the required MDOT work elements..

Transportation Maintenance Worker E8

Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level with required work elements.

Additional Requirements and Information

All newly hired state employees are required to submit and pass a pre-employment drug test and physical (if applicable) prior to their actual appointment. Criminal and driving records will also be checked if applicable. Any position offer will be conditional until resuts of the drug test, physical, criminal background, and driving records indicate eligibility for employment.

Satisfactory completion of the Department of Transportation Maintenance Work Element Training

and Certification program required for the specific level.

Some positions may also be assigned duties that require the application of pesticides that may require certification or registration as a pesticide applicator in compliance with the Pesticide Control Act of 1976.

Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
