Job Description/Responsibilities

  • Mentor, lead and direct 4-8 Gas Field Leaders, and/or lead the design or implementation of key operational projects impacting multiple locations.

  • Support local leadership during inspections/audits from outside agencies (MPSC) and apply a thorough understanding of policies/gas standards coupled with leadership skills to resolve process and employee issues.

  • Integrate operational plans with plans of other work groups and business units.

  • Partner with other regional and process management to implement tactics, control costs and make mid-course adjustments.

  • Direct and coordinate all gas service operating activities in area of responsibility and coordinate operating activities with other areas.

  • Ensure compliance with the Michigan Gas Safety Code.

  • Identify and implement high level long term strategic and tactical plans to ensure corporate objectives are met.

  • Select, develop and maintain a highly qualified, motivated, productive, diverse and team-oriented work force.

  • Build customer loyalty by providing superior service to meet or exceed the needs and expectations of all internal and external customers.

  • Manage safety programs and focus employees on working safely at all times.

  • Establish priorities and resource allocation of capital and O & M Expenditures.

  • Utilize CE Way practices and principles that focus on contribution to team and operation excellence, ensuring that results are achieved and driven by delivering value to the customer.

  • Develop operational score cards to ensure successful execution.


  • A High School Diploma is required.

  • Five or more years’ of experience in the Gas Service/Distribution Field Leader role or other comparable exempt positions.

The following experience/ skills may set you apart from others:

  • Bachelors Degree in appliable experience

  • Knowledge of Consumers Energy gas standards and policies.

  • Knowledge of Working Agreement

  • Ability to develop and complete a written business case for operational improvements.

  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office).

  • Experience in conflict management, problem solving, planning, budgeting and cost control.

  • Knowledge of continuous improvements principles/concepts.

  • Ability to build consensus and implement initiatives at all levels of the organization.

Essential Functions

Responsible for the planning, organization, coordination, evaluating and supervision of employees assigned to the operation, maintenance and construction of gas distribution systems, customer gas services, buildings and grounds or utility support areas. Recommends proposed changes and enhancements to systems and facilities operation, responds to complaints and requests for information, prepares and maintains reports of completed job orders and the status of jobs in progress. Inspects job sites to check on work progress, assure satisfactory completion and plans new assignments, prepares requisitions for operations and maintenance supplies, equipment and materials and supervises special projects as required. Conducts regular safety meetings, participates as a member of safety committee; investigates and completes necessary incident reports and accident reports; maintains records, prepares and submits required reports for appropriate agencies.

Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual to work a minimum of 40 hours per week with a majority of the time spent in the office or specific field locations. Individual needs to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with emergency response activities and could be given very short notice to do so. Individual should be willing to participate in the ICS on call rotation in case of potential emergency response activities. Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with storm restoration or ICS events which may require overnight stays. Could potentially work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the customer, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime. Individual must have a valid driver’s license.
