The Electric Field Leader Job Family is used in Electric Transmission and Distribution. The Senior Field Leader I will provide planning, direction, regulatory compliance and oversight to assure completion of field construction, maintenance, service and emergency work to Company Electric Transmission and Distribution facilities in a safe and cost effective manner. Typically employees in this job family are well versed in Electric system configuration, work methods and standards and have the aptitude to utilize both office and field technology to plan and execute work, the capacity to initiate and implement appropriate change; and the ability to direct and monitor the work performance of others while developing their employees’ technical and teamwork capabilities.
The successful candidate will work from the Grand Rapids Service Center.
This position provides leadership for Field Leaders who oversee those performing maintenance and repairs of the Metropolitan System and HVD/LVD Substations and will be expected to fill in on a temporary basis for the Substation Maintenance Manager as needed. Candidate will also be responsible for oversight of contractors performing civil and electrical work for the Metropolitan System. Candidate must have the ability to learn and utilize technology in support of maintenance activities, and be highly capable of promoting and supporting safe practices, procedures and employee behaviors. Must also have the ability to understand and administer the provisions of the working agreement.
The Senior Field Leader I:
Will typically supervise 2-4 Electric Field Leaders, and/or lead the design or implementation of key operational projects impacting multiple locations.
May supervise other salaried employees.
Will execute the implementation of key operational projects or problem-solving initiatives.
Will play a significant role in hiring and developing Electric Field Leaders.
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
Demonstrated skill in application of quality systems.
Understanding of Work Management.
Understanding of how resources are identified and aligned in the work plan.
Demonstrated capacity to direct company and non-company resources in both routine and non-routine/emergency operations.
Demonstrated ability to lead successful projects.
Thorough understanding of business drivers and operational priorities.
Advanced skill in relating to union employees and leadership.
Demonstrated skill in transfer of knowledge and employee development.
Developing skill in budget management and financial acumen.
Candidate should have previous experience in the maintenance and/or operations of Substations and the Metropolitan System.
Must be able to complete complex tasks and be a team player with strong leadership skills to direct, motivate and develop employees.
Effective planning and administrative skills for scheduling and execution of construction work plans is needed.
Excellent communication skills are required to negotiate with large commercial, industrial and residential customers.
A self-starter, and must possess the ability to coordinate activities among internal and external work groups.
A High School diploma / GED.
6 or more years of successful performance as an Electric Field Leader or other comparable exempt positions.
Technical knowledge in electric transmission and distribution gained either through a technical field of study and/or through related work experience.
Working outside of normal work hours during storm or emergency restoration and responding to customer emergencies during anytime of the day, including evenings and weekends.
Associates or Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Strong problem solving skills.
Project Management experience or PMP Certification.
Utility or electrical contractor experience.
Previous experience managing a team.
Demonstrated skill in coaching and development of leaders.
Working Agreement knowledge.
Responsible for the planning, organization, coordination, evaluation and supervision of employees assigned to the maintenance and construction of Electric substation and metropolitan systems, customer Electric services, buildings and grounds or utility support areas.
Recommends proposed changes and enhancements to systems and facilities operation; responds to complaints and requests for information; prepares and maintains reports of completed job orders and the status of jobs in progress.
Inspects job sites to check on work progress, assure satisfactory completion and plans new assignments; prepares requisitions for operations and maintenance supplies, equipment and materials and supervises special projects as required.
Conducts regular safety meetings, participates as a member of safety committee; investigates and completes necessary incident reports and accident reports; maintains records, prepares and submits required reports for appropriate agencies.
Implements preventative maintenance programs.
Regular attendance is expected.
Hours and Travel
This position requires the individual to work a minimum of 40 hours per week with a majority of the time spent in the office or specific field locations.
Travel is required to job sites and responsible headquarters (typically 70%).
All salaried Electric Operations employees are required to have a storm role.
Individual is required to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with storm or emergency restoration activities and could be given very short notice to do so.
Individual is required to participate as necessary in the on-call rotation in case of potential storms or outages with other Field Leaders across the state.
Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with restoration activities which may require overnight stays.
Could potentially work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the customer, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
The work takes place in all weather conditions--the ability to work in the elements is an expected part of this position.
Individual must have a valid Driver’s License.
