Dow Chemical Construction Safety Manager in Midland, Michigan

The Capital and Engineering organization is a new function within Corteva Agriscience™,Agriculture Division ofDowDuPont™ that is chartered to deliver capital solutions, engineering, and project execution expertise across the Ag Division, for both the Crop Protection and Seeds Platforms. This organization has many exciting new job opportunities, including this posting for aConstruction Safety Managerposition for NA region. The person will be operating from Midland, MI, be responsible for Construction Safety Management oversight on all the projects at Midland, besides having safety oversight responsibility for the rest of NA region.

The Construction Safety Manager for NA shall manage and coordinate all construction safety activities and / or on specific project(s) at Midland. Corteva plans to have strategic alliance with EPCM / EPC companies directly managing the contractors. As an active member during FEL-2 and FEL3 planning and documentation process, the ideal candidate shall assure construction safety and contracting strategies meet both project and business objectives, engage the EPCM/EPC companies for construction safety input to the design. He/she shall also be accountable to review and align on completeness of contractors’ safety plan for every project. The Construction Safety Manager shall ensure the owner’s safety process for contractors at the site level is adequately managed to protect workers and Corteva’s assets by eliminating incident, injury, illness, property damage, and adverse environmental impact. Responsible for administration, consultation, and auditing of site SHE systems to ensure an effective safety program is in place. Responsible for developing the skills of site safety and health personnel and assists the site with development of continuous improvement programs, leading metrics, and new safety technology. Participate in construction industry associations, national standards committees, and act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to the sites on contractor and construction safety matters, with emphasis on high risk activities.

    • PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE: *
  • Working with Corteva project team members, EPCM / EPC companies and sometimes directly with construction contractors and project scheduler, to establish coordinated work activities and manage potential co-occupancy safety interferences between activities in the same location at the same time.

  • Work with EPCM / EPC companies and sometimes directly with construction contractors to ensure a site construction safety plan is developed and implemented for their activities. Sets frequency and duration of individual contractor scheduled safety meetings.

  • Audit and monitor construction activities in target projects to ensure that Corteva/site safe practices and policies are being followed. Develop and guide training needs according to audit results.

  • Ensure all EPCM/EPC/construction contractors have provided proper training in Life Critical Standards that apply to their activities.

  • Network and collaborate with businesses, measure safety performance, assess trends, and use risk assessment guidelines to achieve and sustain safety performance improvements

  • Coordinate interpretation and implementation of federal, state, and local regulations with Corteva SHE standards, policies, and guidelines. Auditing site policies, process procedures, and site practices to assure effectiveness and compliance.

  • Ensure risk assessments and analyses during FEL are conducted to identify and evaluate the potential for injury/death, property damage, financial loss and/or negative publicity

  • Ensure adequate communication with respect to compliance issues, best practices, safety performance / healthiness, benchmarking data, and incidents.

  • Be a resource on Corteva EHS&S policies & programs by working closely with EHS&S organization and ensure that they are implemented on capital projects with operational discipline to manage corporate risk / liability.

  • Ensure that EPCM / EPC safety resources are verified for their competency and experience prior to deployment on project site and they are allocated to manage safety at the construction site

  • Assess contractor work processes including auditing and continuous improvement

  • Ensures that all construction assets are in de-energized and otherwise safe condition when turned over to the start-up and commissioning work.

  • Responsible to the Corteva Project Leadership for managing Contractors’ Safety at project sites.

  • Collaborates with C&E Leadership, Project Leadership, and EHS&S organization for continuous improvement opportunities and advises on the applicable changes in safety standards and regulations.

  • Provides input into Contractor Safety and provides trend analysis

  • Assure visible evergreen metrics are available to measure/assess the health of the construction safety on capital projects viz-a-viz Industrial benchmarks. Monitors and tracks contractor work for safety management; Provides progress reports on construction Safety activities to Project Leadership.

  • Review and evaluate any incident or accident reports for thoroughness and broadly communicate related key learnings.

  • Ensure all Corteva Construction safety processes / standards / principles documents that may be shared externally including contractors adhere to Intellectual Property (IP) / Trade Secret Content Policy (TS) management.

  • Maximize bringing ‘Outside-In’ from organizations such as CII, CURT, etc., to advance on Continuous Improvement on Construction Safety Management.

  • Sets expectations for contractors, assures Business objectives are met and audits contractor’s performance.

  • Ensures critical Safety review and audit processes are in place and effective

  • Responsible to the Corteva’s Project Leadership for managing Contractors’ Safety at Project Sites, for their assigned projects to ensure that construction contractors are following site and corporate best safety practices and policies for managing the safety of all employees on the construction site.

  • Drives technology applications to advance construction safety, effectiveness, and continuous improvement

  • Ensure all construction safety processes of the projects being managed, strictly adhere to the Ag Div.’s Corporate/Business Intellectual Property (IP) / Trade Secrets (TS) content policy

KEY INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER ROLES:

  • Construction Management Leader, Other Corteva Construction Safety professionals.

  • Construction Safety, EHS&S Professionals, and Contract Administrators – for managing robust safety and Construction Contract processes and consultation

  • Capital Execution Leaders, NA region – to ensure construction safety management expectations are in line with Projects and business objectives

  • Project Managers – provides Construction Safety Strategy, provide / review Contracting Plan, Project safety Plan for management and control, etc.

  • Contractor Safety Manager – ensures awareness and compliance with site and corporate requirements for managing construction activities on the work site safely.

  • Purchasing – During pre-qualification process

  • Production and Operations Leadership – for projects that are constructing in or adjacent to operating facilities, develop agreed work permitting practices for the project and operation at hand and for safe execution of construction works.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • About 12-15 years of construction safety management experience both brown field and green field projects. Safety professionals with 8-12 years of experience with passion to learn and lead will still be considered.

  • Familiarity / working knowledge of NA / U.S. Safety standards for Construction and Contractors’ safety

  • Familiar with Risk Management practices and procedures

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

  • Should have successfully managed multiple small projects and at least few large projects

TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Industry standard best practice in Construction & Contractors’ safety Management

  • Use of industry accepted Microsoft applications - Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Broad understanding of EPC disciplines and activities that are necessary to provide construction safety inputs during design, construction, and starting-up of plants / facilities.

  • Experience in Construction safety managing / overseeing construction contractors and EPCM / EPC companies.

SOFT SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Self-motivated and ability to independently manage construction safety on projects and receptive to strategic directions

  • Great time management skills including the ability to manage a substantial work load.
