Lead Structures Engineer

Function Overview:

This opening is located in the KitchenAid Small Appliance Structures Department in Saint Joseph Tech Center. Appliances include Stand Mixers, Hand Mixers, Blenders, and Accessories for each. These products are assembled in Greenville Ohio USA. This job function is responsible for the engineering and technical operations of the organization. We are seeking a Lead Mechanical Structures Engineer that can be flexible in the tasks/activities given. Activities include designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; and interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications;Develops and drives technical strategy across sub-system or module set including project execution, knowledge creation/capture, and technical mentorship.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Product level advisor on the execution of technology programs and projects with proper controls and management of technical risks to ensure work is planned and conducted on a sound engineering basis in their discipline space.

  • Lead and execute mechanical engineering of new product development projects on time, on cost, and at best quality as needed by multiple System Integrators.

  • Balance multiple project priorities and direct work of Computer-Aided Designer (CAD), outsourced engineering, and potentially subsystem engineers to ensure timely completion

  • Leads attribute target setting for the subsystem/module for specific projects

  • Accountable for Technical Design Previews (TDP) project sign-off that attribute targets were achieved and work was completed on a sound engineering basis

  • Globally accountable for system-level attribute performance to enable product leadership

  • Major contributor on technical strategy and development on technology programs to pass key tollgates

  • Lead systemic problem-solving efforts input to close knowledge gaps in major subsystems in the development of more robust system models

  • Accountable to develop technology roadmaps to identify gaps, and execute/support priorities to close New, Unique, and Difficult product attributes and the evaluation of design options to achieve desired results.

  • Key technical leadership through contribution to the development of the Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio, patent attainment, and achievement of sustainable technology advantage

  • Develop technical expertise throughout the organization, through coaching, mentoring, development, and infusion of new technologies

  • Manage concept testing, prototype builds, engineering builds and pre-pilot builds with tech leads

  • Leverages knowledge through key suppliers and liaison to other external organizations

  • 70% leading development work on critical subsystem priorities

  • 30% proactive technical coaching

  • Work with, coordinate and lead Whirlpool Corporation India Subsidiary (GTEC) CAD designers as part of the broader CAD support strategy

  • Drive the completion of Design for Manufacturing reviews by leveraging Manufacturing and tooling suppliers

  • Develop a strong relationship with the Greenville process partners (Machining, Painting, Assembly, Quality, Lean Team, etc)

  • Have a hands-on approach to product development by spending time in the lab developing tests and/or completing tests with Technicians.

  • 10% travel (Mostly Domestic);Ability to travel to manufacturing locations in the USA and Global suppliers

  • Responsible for driving Product Leadership through the Whirlpool Corporation Product Development process, including the following:

  • Create a procurement package for Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

  • Create and develop engineering specification documents and part items requiring revision control

  • Create and lock package for quotation/tooling

  • Release part items and engineering specification documents

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • 5+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering

  • Experience with Technical Subsystems Project Execution in Mechanical Structures

Preferred Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree

  • Black Belt certification

  • Top-down system-level knowledge, Voice of the Consumer (VOC) Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to Design Validation Plan (DVP)

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Tools, Google Tools, and Project/Smart Sheets

  • ProEngineer knowledge

  • Strong ability to analyze mechanical systems and create design solutions

  • Attention to details

  • Strong critical thinking and issue follow-up and resolution skills

  • Excellent ability to identify and drive resolution to engineering problems

  • Strong initiative and self-drive

  • Organizational, Communication, analytical, and Interpersonal Skills

  • Experience in designing the following component types: injection, blow-molded, thermoformed, and extruded plastic parts

  • Knowledge of gas assist and two-shot part design

  • Knowledge of metal component processes including laser and waterjet cutting, progressive stamping and bending, Zinc/Aluminum/Magnesium Die Casting, press die forming and extruding

  • Knowledge in Gear and bearing systems
