PURPOSE The purpose of this examination is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present or possible future vacancies in this classification. For each vacancy, a Department Director/Division Manager has the choice of the applicants in the top group. This list will remain in effect for six months, unless exhausted, superseded by a new eligible list or extended for another six months by the Human Resources Committee.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE TEST The examination will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's responses on the official employment application form that includes supplemental questions regarding the applicant's training and experience. Your responses will be scored and there are no test retakes. You will be notified of your results by email.

The exam content as described above may be modified depending upon the number of applicants or other factors that influence the practicality or usefulness of this selection process. Where minor differences in actual test scores do not reflect meaningful differences in ability, those scores will be statistically grouped resulting in a tie among those applicants. CLOSING WITHOUT A DATE This is a continuous examination, and applications will be accepted until such time as there are sufficient applicants to meet the County's current recruitment needs. As such, interested persons should make application promptly. Applicants will be tested in groups as they apply. Successful applicants, regardless of their testing date, will be ranked on the eligible list based on their final examination scores. The original rank of persons on the eligible list may change as later applicants are tested and added to the list. Notice of the last date to apply for this examination will be posted in the Human Resources Department and on this posting one week prior to the application deadline. Applications will not be accepted after the posted closing date.

Job Summary

Under direct supervision, performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the assistance of higher level maintenance personnel. Assists in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing County sanitary sewer, water, and storm drain systems. Lifts access covers to locate and remove debris in pipe lines. Also removes obstructions from open drains and catch basins. Assists in operating sewer cleaning and video inspection equipment. Repairs and assists in maintenance of manholes, pipe, and other facilities. May read and record water consumption meters, collect sewage samples, and assist Sewage Metering staff maintain various electronic meters. Uses hand tools to mix mortar and cement, dig and level earth, and sand and paint surfaces. Drives truck to transport work crews and materials. Cleans and prepares work sites, and clears debris. Cleans and maintains machinery, tools, and equipment. Lifts heavy objects on a regular basis, such as iron access covers and cement rings. May work in confined areas underground. Is alert to hazards and uses safe techniques on the job. Provides a written record of work performed, and follows department work and safety procedures.

Employees of this classification are required to be available for operational problems, equipment emergencies, widespread storms, power outages and other operations and maintenance emergencies as deemed necessary by management after normal working hours, weekends and holidays. Also, employees in this classification are required to be on assigned On-Call and/or On-Call alternate, as required by management.

Minimum Qualifications

At the time of application, applicants must:

  1. Have had at least six (6) months of full-time experience in a construction or maintenance field or related area; AND

  2. Possess a valid United States motor vehicle Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Group "A" designation. Out of Country driver's license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver's license before the hire date.

Employees are required to possess additional endorsements when assigned to the following areas: A. Sewer Maintenance - "N" endorsement with air brakes B. Construction Drain Maintenance - "N" endorsement with air brakes C. Sewage Treat Plants - "N" endorsement with air brakes D. Water Maintenance - Air brakes endorsement

NOTE: Employees without the required CDL at time of application must obtain it by the end of the six-month probationary period, at the employee's expense.

  1. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this class.

  2. Successfully complete the six month probationary period.

Special Requirements

Must maintain a valid United States, unexpired, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) as specified under required minimum qualifications.
